Understand
Behavior, sensation, emotion, movement, and physiological responses can all carry information. Start with curiosity.
Technology designed with nervous systems in mind
Allostasis Labs is exploring new ways to help people understand what nervous systems are communicating—and respond with meaningful support.
Explore our approach ↓Learning the language
Our nervous systems continually interpret and respond to the world around us. But what feels safe, supportive, connecting, or regulating for one person may feel entirely different to another.
When we learn to recognize what a nervous system is communicating, we can begin to respond in ways it understands—through our environments, our senses, our relationships, and the support we provide.
There is no universal language of regulation. Understanding those differences gives us the opportunity to support people as they are, rather than asking them to override or just ignore what their nervous systems are telling them.
A two-way conversation
When we can hear what a nervous system is communicating, we can begin to understand how to respond.
Notice the signals without immediately trying to change them.
Get curious about what the nervous system may be communicating.
Offer signals, environments, and connection that make sense to that nervous system.
Create the conditions in which flexibility and regulation can emerge.
Our approach
Regulation isn't something we command from the nervous system. We can create conditions that support safety, predictability, autonomy, connection, and adaptation—and give the nervous system room to respond.
Our work begins with understanding. Understanding creates the opportunity for connection. Connection makes meaningful support possible. And with the right support, regulation becomes something we can foster rather than force.
Behavior, sensation, emotion, movement, and physiological responses can all carry information. Start with curiosity.
Understanding another nervous system creates space for empathy, relationship, and co-regulation.
Respond to the need—not simply the outward behavior—with support that fits the individual nervous system.
When the right conditions are present, regulation can emerge without turning calmness or compliance into the goal.
The ideas behind our work
NoticeBehavior is information.
CuriosityCuriosity cultivates understanding.
UnderstandingUnderstanding guides supportive connection.
ConnectionConnection brings safety.
SafetySafety supports regulation.
Beyond the individual
Our nervous systems don't exist in isolation. They are continually responding to the people and environments around us—and communicating in return.
When we begin to understand the language of another person's nervous system, we can replace assumptions with curiosity and create more meaningful opportunities for connection and co-regulation.
Different nervous systems need different things. Understanding that difference changes how we support one another.

What we're building
We're creating thoughtful, innovative technology designed to help people better understand and support nervous systems in everyday life.
We design with neurodivergent minds at the center while recognizing something universal: every person has a nervous system continually working to protect, adapt, connect, and respond to the world around them.
More to come.
